Music and the Beach: How to Rock Your Summer Break

By Charles Saragossa

Your garden is blooming and your fruit ripens (if it is not getting devoured by insects or brave birds, that is). You are probably enjoying the sweet scent that spring left in your nostrils, and captured in the droplets of dew on your lawn in May. You've had enough of your city, and you feel the need to become Lewis or Clarke and explore. There's treasure to be found! There are adventures to be had! It's summer time, land of summer blockbusters and jammin new music. If you're heading out on a trip this summer, make sure you pack a respectable library of music to take with you.

Music is great for long car trips for many reasons. The first is that music helps keep you entertained. It can get pretty lonely on the road, but singing along to your favorite song or new music release can keep you entertained for hours. Singing along with friends is a bonus. Who wouldn't love karaoke night all the way to Vegas or Daytona Beach? Listening to music will also help you stay awake if you ever find yourself getting sleepy.

Using music on your trip can help enhance the experience. In years to come, you may be listening to a radio station and hear that one song you listened to on repeat while out on the dance floor in a new city, with new friends, and you will be able to recall every moment, every scent, every feeling from that night. Music is power stuff, and your memories will thank you for giving them a hook upon which to attach more details.

There's a reason music is a billion dollar industry. 1.) it's a perfectly legal mood enhancer/alterer, and 2.) because people connect with it. Music defines who you are, music defines your disposition in life. Music speaks for you when you don't know how to say it. Bring it with you and it'll be there like your best friend, a shoulder to cry on, or a crazy and wild 2 a.m. drive down Highway 66.

Here is a bonus way to get the most out of your summer by using music. Check out a local radio station to a city you plan on traveling to. Find out what their top 12 songs are, and buy the mp3s individually. Do this in the weeks leading up to the trip, and you can find yourself leaving on your vacation in your mind long before you actually arrive. And then, when you DO get there, the songs on the radio will remind you of home, while still being in a new and exciting place, striking a perfect balance.
