The Great Popularity Of Vampire Movies

By Adriana Noton

Thanks to box office hits like the Twilight series, vampire movies are back in vogue, though in truth, they have never really been out of fashion. The first film that featured vampires can date back as old as cinema itself, and over the past century there have literally been thousands of films based on their theme.

Before Edward Cullen became the world's most popular vampire, there was of course Dracula, the infamous Transylvanian Count. His story has been resurrected a number of times, many following Bram Stoker's novel, but other stories have also been created around the character to make other vampire movies.

In 1992 Francis Ford Coppola made the movie most loyal to Bram Stoker's book, starring Gary Oldman in the title role of Dracula. Also starring Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing, Keanu Reeves and Wynona Ryder, The Godfather director made one of the best adaptations yet.

Dracula, or Nosferatu, has been a popular character in vampire movies for as long as you can remember, and the character has appeared in over two hundred and fifty films. German Max Schreck was the first to play the role, way back in 1922 and hundreds of actors have followed in his footsteps. Another German actor, Thomas Kretschmann will play the role in Dracula 3D in 2012, ninety years later, bringing the character full circle

Perhaps Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee are the two actors most famous for playing the role. Lugosi starred in the 1931 version, and his image on the poster remains one of cinema's most iconic images. British actor Christopher Lee, played the role in twelve different films, and has since gone on to star in more recent classic like the new Star Wars and of course in Lord of the Rings. He was obviously born to play Dracula, having been born in 1922, the first year the character appeared on screen.

Comedies have also been a very popular choice to include Dracula in, and the two have worked together well in the past. George Hamilton was unforgettable in Love at First Bite, while The Naked Gun's Leslie Nielsen was a bumbling bloodsucker in Dracula: Dead and Loving It. Continuing the trend, Adam Sandler will take on the part in 2012's Hotel Transylvania.

Of course like Bram Stoker, other writers have inspired great vampire movies. Of course the Twilight Saga is based on the book series by the world's most successful current writer, Stephanie Meyer, who has sold over one hundred million copies of her books. They have been translated into a number of different languages and continue to sell like hot cakes.

She follows in the footsteps of another female writer whose books have made good vampire movies, Anne Rice. Another who has sold almost one hundred million books, she has written a number of series based around Vampires. Two that have made popular films are The Queen of the Damned, starring Stuart Townsend and the late actress-singer, Aaliyah, and the smash-hit, Interview with the Vampire. The latter of course starred Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise as Lestat and a young Antonio Banderas and even younger Kirsten Dunst.

If vampires are your thing, you are definitely in luck when it comes to movies. You can watch romantic films, horrors, action or comedies with your favorite characters in them.
