Tips On How To Become A Male Model
In the fashion world, it seems like it's always all about the girls. Fortunately there is a thriving fashion industry for men. Male models are routinely getting booked.
If you're interested in modeling and feel you have what it takes, here are some easy tips to get started. Keep in mind that most agencies look for a height from five feet eleven inches to six feet two inches and under 175 pounds. Male models often work into their 40's - many more years than female models.
A toned body is generally a must. Primarily male models are not overly muscular (like a body builder), but they generally have a healthy and fit physique. Nice looking skin is a also helpful.
1. Locate an agency near you.
If you are in a large city, this won't be difficult.
If there is no agency in your town try the next largest town in your area until you find an agency. Boutique agencies can also be found all over the country that take on some local work. Review their websites.
Certain agencies have particular restrictions for what they need their male models to follow. Certain agencies only have women models. Double check and do your research; you don't want to waste everyone's time sending photos to a female only agency. Plus find out how they take on new models. Sometimes they will either have an open call, where you go to the agency and present yourself, and they usually have a separate time and date for men, or they will request that you to mail your pictures in. The photos do not have to be professional. They simply need to display your full body, in swim wear or underwear, and your face and dazzling smile.
2. Create your portfolio.
Whether you find an agent immediately or not, you're going to need photos. You can find a photographer on your own, or get recommendations from your agency if you have one. Make sure you find someone whose photos look like they could be in a magazine or catalogue. Your pics need to look as professional as possible. Body shots and head shots are standard, along with a look in fashionable attire. Look at the male models in photos in magazines and catalogues, and try to build a portfolio that shows all your different moods and features.
3. Follow your passions.
Keep sending out your professional photos if you haven't found an agent yet. You have to keep knocking on doors, and it could take a few tries. Also, if you are able to move, try sending your photos to various cities, and see if your look is perfect for another city.
4. Be available for Go-sees and auditions.
Once you sign with an agency, you will have to create an open schedule. Day jobs do not work well for models because you will need to attend castings (or go-sees) during the day time. Furthermore, note that often castings and bookings take place with not much notice. Another helpful tip: ensure that you have a valid passport. Who knows, you may get sent off to some far-flung place for a print campaign at a moment's notice.
