Fun Craft Idea
Keeping kids creative can be fun and easy. Utilize items commonly found around the home and encourage them to experiment in making their own crafts. These crafts don't have to be intricate or difficult and the kids will be more creative with a minimum of instruction. Use these craft ideas as boredom busters for a rainy afternoon when the kids have run out of things to do.
Recycled Robot
Everyone has heard about the importance of recycling items. One way to recycle is to re-purpose items that have already been used. This activity will require some scissors, duct tape, glue, markers and a bunch of used items from around the home. Examples include empty cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, empty tin cans or plastic bottles and wire ties from bread bags. Lay everything out on the table and tell the kids to make a robot from the items. Let them figure out how to make a body, arms, legs and a head. They may want to use other items such as tin foil, wax paper or construction paper to add details and additional elements. Once they have made their robot the kids may well spend the rest of the afternoon playing with it.
Food Art
Kids frequently get told to stop playing with their food when they are trying to avoid eating something they don't like. This craft will allow them to play with their food and eat the results. Use frozen bread dough in the same way kids use clay to create a sculpture. Follow the package directions on frozen bread dough to thaw the dough and let it rise. Divide the risen dough into equal portions for each artist. Once they have completed their sculpture let it rise again before baking in an oven preheated to 350 degrees. Bake for 20 at least 20 minutes and let the sculpture cool before eating.
Children who enjoy building with legos or blocks will like building with marshmallows and toothpicks. Insert a marshmallow onto each end of a toothpick to create a building beam. Use these beams to make buildings, bridges or other art. Insert more than one toothpick into the same marshmallow to create more complex buildings. Be sure to take a picture of the final sculpture before letting the kids eat the marshmallows.
Group Art
This is a group activity that will have everyone working together to create an unusual work of art. This activity can be done with clay as well as paper and markers. Everyone should sit around a table or work surface so they are close enough to pass items to each other. Give each participant a piece of blank white paper and a single colored marker. Each person can have a different color of marker. Each person will make a specific type of mark on the paper as directed by an adult. First have everyone draw a straight line anywhere on the paper and pass the paper to the left. Next they should draw a circle somewhere on the paper and again pass it to the left. Continue this process having each person add a triangle, square, oval, heart and rectangle to the picture. Once each person has finished take a look at the finished results. This activity can also be done with clay and have each person use a different color of clay to add to the art.
These art ideas are a great way to help kids practice their creative thinking while having fun making something entirely new.
