Xbox 360 2 Red Light Error - Environmental And Hardware Causes

By James Kelly

If you have an Xbox 360 that flashes the two red light error, get to the bottom of this problem quickly because you are facing a severe overheating problem.

Overheating should never be taken lightly. If you let this happen to often, your Xbox will become heat damaged and cease to function altogether. The red ring of death or three red light error can occur after repeated overheating. If you get the ring of death as a result of overheating, then damage has already occurred.

There are two broad reasons why your Xbox 360 is overheating:

1.) Improper usage or treatment of your console.

You will have make some changes to your usage habits as well as to the consoles location. The console requires a lot of open and well ventilated space, otherwise the fans won't be able to cool off the internal electronics.

Therefore it's very important to take notice of the area next to the fan vents. It should be dust and clutter free. By now it should be clear that an enclosure is the wrong place to keep your Xbox.

Beware of heat sources next to the console. Some of these are obvious like a heater duct or a hot furnace. Other sources of heat are less obvious such as nearby electronics that are putting out their own heat or direct sunlight coming in through the window. You should also keep the power supply on a hard surface away from surrounding dust or clutter.

The Xbox will also overheat if you use it too much. Turn it off for a while and let it cool off. Don't use your Xbox more than two hours at a time.

2.) Your Xbox is damaged in some way.

What I mean by this is that a hardware component isn't properly functioning. Don't assume that something is broken until you've tried out the previous suggestions on proper usage first. Otherwise money may be wasted on unnecessary repair work.

Overheating can be caused by the following hardware issues:

A.) The cooling fans have stopped working or are too weak.

Replacement will be required.

B.) The thermal compound on the GPU or CPU is too old and requires replacement.

The GPU and the CPU is connected to a heat sink with thermal paste. Thermal paste that is too dry will not conduct heat anymore which means that the heat sinks cannot cool the CPU or GPU.

C.) The motherboard inside the console is caked in dust.

Unlike cleaning out dust from the vents, this will require opening up the Xbox to allow access to the internal electronics. Since dust buildup is a slow process, this won't be an issue for a new Xbox.
