Cool Fashion Weeks - London, New York, Milan & Paris

By Mark Walters

Anyone who wants to know what is going on in the current fashion season will want to pay close attention to the top contributors - the New York, Paris, London, and Milan fashion weeks. These fashion weeks exhibit the world's best designers, models, and buyers.

New York fashion week was the world's first structured fashion week held in 1943. It is semi-annual, held in February and September of each year. This past show, military jackets, uniquely lined with fur, had its debut by Adam Lippes, paired with slouched ankle boots. Zac Posen uncovered a mixture of flirty skirts and dresses, brilliantly skimming the thigh. Some of the most wearable, as well as attainable designs were created by Lela Rose.

London fashion week is another component of the major four. The show is held twice a year, in February and September, and made its debut in 1984. This year Vivienne Westwood's catwalk was one again filled with an explosive political message, sending the first model prancing down in Guantanamo-orange hipsters, adorned with a sign stating "Fair Trial My Arse". Christopher Kane, a relative novel designer showed with his fourth London fashion week collection. Graduating only in 2005 from Central St. Martins, he is already considered to be London's 'Wonder boy'. His newest collection held true to when he self-confessed to being a romantic at heart, which was feminine and floating in the air.

Paris fashion week is yet another powerhouse in the fashion world. Their semi-annual shows present with a spring/summer, and a fall/winter time frame. Dries Van Noten was inspired by military fashions, and showed his collection of hand-embroidered gold braiding, bandleader jackets, belted-trench coats, military shirts with raised collars, and trousers with a full leg cut, which are reminiscent of militaries of past eras. The central focus of Louis Vuitton's designs was concentrated on cut and construction, with double-breasted jackets, square shoulders, belted knit cardigans, puffed vests, as well as a feather packed jacket, which hugged the body like armor.

Finally, Milan fashion week is yet another mega source of fashion, and is owned by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, a not-for-profit organization. Their most recent show had The Brothers Caten debut of a collection of feminine eyelet embellished dress, along with the masculine dress inspired by the tuxedo. Anna Molinari was inspired by the 70's, as other designers have been this year. Animal prints infused with feminine tones of pinks, peaches and ice blues, were her showing this season.

The inspiration for each season's hottest trends is drawn from the top four fashion weeks. The most radical designs will also influence what you see in clothing stores, and quite possibly in your closet, when a designer tones down the extreme into a more appropriate and wearable outfit. If you want to wear the most current and hottest trends, pay attention to what comes out of these shows.
