Standard Picture Frame Sizes For Your Artwork

By Anne Harvester

A bit of information you may need about standard picture frame sizes for your photos, will be discussed here. Sometimes you need to look at what you are putting into the framework, and is there a portion of it you want to stand out. You can purchase a common size structure and than get a border for the inside. This will change the focus of your photo and make the part you wanted to stand out more visible.

You need to know that the dimensions in the casing are the ones on the inside where the backing comes off and the glass is. You will have some prints that are the perfect size for standard picture frame sizes and others that will need a "matte around it, to show the part of prints you want to see. Just knowing this bit of information will help you in determining what you are looking for.

When you see photos around someone's home, either on tables or hung on walls they are normally holding family images. Some may display an entire year of school photos in one framework. This would be accomplished by changing the inside border to one that has spaces for many photos.

Places other than the United States of America measure the size of their casings in centimeters, while the U. S. Uses inches as the standard for dimensions. Some casing can be put on display in both the horizontal and vertical positions, others can not. For example, a 8 x 10 casing can be either vertical or horizontal, but a 10 x 8 can only be horizontal.

When you want to be able to stand-up your picture-frame you need to look at the backing. If the first dimension is the smaller of the numbers it will be able to be placed in either direction, horizontal or vertical. But, if the first number is larger it can only be stood up horizontally. This goes for hanging photos too. On the smaller first sizes the mounting hardware will be in two places, on the others it will only be in one area.

Understanding the standard picture frame sizes, and what you can do with them, will give you the ability to display you favorite photos exactly as you would like. Some people like to stand their photos on mantles or tables. Other people like to have their favorite pieces of art hanging in prominent places on their walls. It is artwork or prints that get the custom framework, because the usual sizes will not fit. These can easily be found or made for you in a shop.

Out of the standard picture frame sizes, the ones usually used for wall photo displays are the 8 x 10 inch framework. These are normally family photos, or a large pic of an individual.

Before you choose your casing, measure the area you want to be seen. This way when you purchase your casing you will know whether or not you want or need a border or "matte", for your photo. Keep these measurements written down when you go to purchase your framework and you will be sure to get the exact size that you need.
