The Transition From Japanese Art To Japanese Tattoos

By Johnny Tran

In the late seventeen hundreds, popularity of images from Japanese art to Japanese tattoos grew immensely despite numerous attempts to ban the practice. Now considered an ancient art, this practice used to be used as punishment for criminals, in the form of facial tattooing. Some believed that the skin art was to signify ranks of social classes or to scare off any wild animals or evil spirits.

The custom of tattooing for criminal punishment faded and tattooing art became a popular fashion statement among many. This type of punishment turned into an art form when artists who practiced this began to disguise incriminating images with more artistic and elaborate designs and symbols. As this trend grew, more and more people began asking for artistic images and pieces that told a story to be permanently inked into their skin.

Many still believe that the colorful characters and symbols have the ability to get rid of lurking beasts and unwanted spirits. Most of the time when someone requests the art of Japan in a tattoo, they are looking to tell a story. Inspiration from ancient woodblock art is where these images originate.

This art form was quickly carried over to other countries and has since became a very popular trend. Artistic designs from these ancients are still in great demand and still carry important meaning and can tell stories of one's life. Woodblock art is still the basis for many designs requested and artists everywhere have implemented its use to satisfy the demand of customers.

Historic images are still most popular when it comes to tattoo trends today. Trends do vary, but the distinct art designs of ancient Japan still carry their historic value. Once a form of punishment, tattooing has become a well known art as well as a type of freedom of speech. Getting a tattoo is no longer a social class rank indication but an art form that has helped many remember important time periods of their lives.

The value of these symbolic images still holds true today and is being implemented in tattoo venues everywhere. They now have more value and meaning because they are no longer used as punishment.

The goal of the artists who specialize in this type of art is to keep its history and importance alive through their work. All pictures and symbols represent a story or indicate an important place in the lives of those who request them. Going online and researching these artists and their work can benefit those interested in getting a tattoo.
