Manhattan's MoMA

By Jacob Smith

If you are a lover of fine art then there may not be a better place to go to in the entire world than the Museum of Modern Art (also known as MoMA) in New York City.

MoMA, located on W. 53rd St. in Midtown Manhattan, is among the most popular and highly respected art museums in the country. About two and a half million people visit it. While that is a good amount of visitors; it should be noted that it is about half as many as visit New York's two most popular museums the Natural History Museum and the Met. I believe the higher foot traffic for these other two museums is due to them being more "family friendly."

The Museum of Modern Art first opened in the fall of 1929 not long after the big stock market crash that began the Great Depression. The idea for the museum was started by Abby Rockefeller and two of her friends. It was 1939 when it moved to its current location on W. 53rd St.

MoMA's Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso exhibitions in the 1930s were instrumental in building up the reputations they continue to hold as some of the greatest painters ever.

You can see many famous works of art at MoMA including Les Desmoiselles d'Avignon by Picasso, I and the Village by Marc Chagall, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali, Broadway Boogie Woogie by Piet Mondrian, Water Lilies triptych by Claude Monet, along with art work by Jackson Pollock, Jasper Johns, Paul Cezanne, and Kazimir Malevich.

If you're not a New Yorker and you are planning on visiting MoMA and New York's other museums on a trip to NYC then you may want to think about buying a New York City Pass which includes a ticket to this museum among over fifty other tourist activities. It's a big money & time saver if you're planning on experiencing as much of New York as possible on your vacation.
