The right way to distinguish a professional magician from a hobbiest

By Ed Clarke

I guess it can be hard to distinguish what a Professional Magician is. I Consider myself as a Professional Magician as I am able to take a look at the clients wants. For example if I have been requested for a trade show I'll take the time to look into the company and discover what main points I want to know to help in promoting there service. Like wise if I've been requested for a wedding reception I am going to need to know precisely what the Customer wants, it isn't always the same. Some shows I'm asked to walk around and just entertain where as other shows I am asked to try and concentrate on keeping the 2 families from fighting.

Another key point from what separates a Magician from a Professional Magician has the ability to create a routine specially for a situation instead of just doing the same tricks the magician has been doing for the last 10 years.

I usually believe that a Professional Magician wishes to keep a particular style

What does One mean? Well if you are a magician that performs for children parties then put your attention on what it is that will make youngsters cheerful and on the flip side if your a Magician that specializes in performing for an adult audience then truly study what adults enjoy and take time to put yourself in the audiences shoes - Is the magic or comedy in your show designed to make them feel good or is it a manipulative type of comedy that gets a cheap chuckle that may make the spectators feel uneasy.

In my viewpoint I think it helps to be flexible with the show you can offer. As an example I Perform for an adult audience however I have learnt many effects and some balloon modelling that will cater for youngsters that could be present at say a wedding reception. But I might never consider myself as a master children's Magician. My experience is in performing for adults and that's why I consider myself as a Professional Magician for an adult audience.
