Discover Gold Coast's Australian Outback Spectacular, Remarkable Stunt Riding

By Leon Randall

Many Australian and overseas visitors enjoy holidays in the Gold Coast area of Queensland. The Gold Coast is in the south-eastern corner of the state, south of the capital Brisbane. The area has a sunny, sub-tropical climate, the long, sandy beaches are world famous for surfing, and inland the hinterland reaches into the rolling, forest covered foothills of Australia's Great Dividing Range. The Australian Outback Spectacular dinner and show is a popular evening entertainment in the suburb of Oxenford. The show includes breathtaking displays of horsemanship and animal handling, broadly themed around the ranching business in the Australian outback.

The Australian Outback Spectacular is the first show of this type in Australia. Featuring both human and animal performers, the storyline is based on the events at a station in the outback. Where station has a similar meaning to ranch in the American West.

The human parts in the show are taken by some of the best stunt riders in Australia, acting out a tale of the rivalry between the Austral Downs and Wondoola Stations. These are real cattle stations, but the story is fictional. The audience are divided into supporters of the two rival stations, and are encouraged to vocally support their station during the action. The actors/performers carry out some incredible and breathtaking feats of skill, either on horseback, or sometimes riding motor vehicles like quad bikes. There is even a helicopter involved at one point.

Of course, not all the stars are human, and one group of animals which play a particularly big part in the show are the horses. All horses are Australian stock horses, and the production team have looked carefully at the skills and temperament of the individual animals to determine what part they play in the show.

Individual horses may never have come across some of the animals they work with in the show (camels for example), and the animal training staff do a thorough job in assessing the suitability of horses before casting them in the show. Many of the horses in the show were working horses before joining the show. Several were stockmens' horses on real cattle stations, one was a mount for the Australian polocrosse team.

Two breeds (Santa Gertudi and Longhorn) of cattle are used in the show. The reddish-brown coloured Gertudis have been in Australia since the 1930s. They are ideal for outback conditions due to high levels of resistance to ticks, and tolerance for the heat. The Longhorns have been on Australian farms for even longer. They were first imported in 1866. There are also many sheep in the show. All are Australian Merino, a breed noted for the quality of the wool produced.

The expert sheepdogs used in the show are all from the short haired border collie breed. Border collies are the most common sheep dogs on real Australian farms. The Outback Spectacular dogs are all from the New South Wales district of Northern Rivers.

Lastly there are three camels. Camels are not native to Australia, but are in many ways ideal for use in the outback. Two of the camels have spent much of their lives trekking through the outback. The third camel, Rodger, is a former racing camel.

The Australian Outback Spectacular is, as the name suggests, a spectacular show of animal management and horsemanship, with a theme based on stock handling in the outback. A barbecue meal is served during the performance. Tickets can be booked online, or at any travel agent or hotel reception in Gold Coast.
