Zeenat Aman - The Beautiful Diva

By Joe Dunne

Zeenat Aman is a stylish star who has always portrayed sensuous and bold characters effortlessly. With a film career spread over around twenty years, she appeared in a lot of Hindi films opposite many of the most handsome and popular actors of Bollywood. She was born in Germany to Scinda and Amanullah Khan. Amanullah Khan is the script writer of Mughal-E-Azam and Pakeezah. It was in India and Los Angeles that Zeenat finished her academic pursuits.

It was as a writer in Femina, a fashion magazine, that she began her career. Afterwards she took up modeling as a career and was famous as a model. She started receiving film offers as an actor after she won the contest named Asia Pacific Pageant, in 1970.

People would not be able to remember Zeenat Aman getting a lot of awards but she truly changed the way women in Hindi movies were shown then. Through her sensuous and bold portrayal of women on screen, she attracted the attention of critics and the masses after she entered Bollywood in the '70s. She personified the youth of the '70s with her character in Hare Rama Hare Krishna, which also had a few memorable songs. Popular songs, Phoolon Ka Taaron Ka features the cuteness and Dum Maro Dum features rebellious side of her character in the film, which was easily portrayed by her. The movie is considered to be a classic in Bollywood.

She brought in the new image of young woman who would wear stylish garments and would showoff her sensuousness openly. Yaadon Ki Baaraat saw the popularity of Zeenat Aman touching new heights and her on-screen image with a Guitar was appreciated by the masses. Chura Liya Hai Tumne became the chartbuster in that year and people are listening to this romantic number even today. She was featured as the cover image for many Indian magazines due to her unparalleled fame among the youth.

Her on screen as a sex symbol was established with the release of the film Satyam Shivam Sundaram in the year 1978. The film intended to show the mind being more beautiful than the body. Her captivating performances continued in the classic film Don starring Amitabh Bachchan. She signed films, which gave her an opportunity to enact both the conventional and the independent woman.

Young stars idolize Zeenat Aman for her style because she was certainly a diva of those times. Other than Parveen Babi, only she has done several different roles in her film career unlike her contemporaries. By giving peppy and romantic numbers like Aap Jaisa Koi, Do Labzon Ki Hain, Panna Ki Tamanna, Satyam Shivam Sundaram Hum Dono Do Premi, and Haey Haey Ye Majboori, she shares the seat of the most sultry actress of Bollywood with Parveen Babi.
