An Introduction to Computer Animation

Computer animation has become very popular. With the use of software, your mouse and keyboard, you can make images on your computer that are almost perfect. Computer animation is being used a lot in many of the new movies that are coming out. Processes have been developed that allow computer animation to be integrated into the movie without a lot of hassle.

Computer generated imagery, more widely known now as Computer Animation, is the process of creating 3D and 2D objects and characters digitally with a computer program written just for this application. These applications use computer graphics to create these images that can be changed, manipulated and moved. You will learn more on this while you are getting your MFA degree online.

When Westworld hit the screen in 1973, people were just amazed at the computer generated imagery that was used. They doubly amazed when Futureworld was released in 1973. Both of these films were the first ever to use computer generated 2D images. Between the years of 1982 and 1984, films like Tron and The Last Starfighter amazed the world with the amount of CGI images used. 1985 showed us the first film using CGI 3D imagery when Pixar released The Young Sherlock Holmes.

The first 2D animations were created with the use of 2D bitmap graphics and 2D vector graphics. Other techniques combined in the process of making the 2D images included but weren't limited to tweening, interpolated rotoscoping, morphing and onion skinning. You will cover how to use all of these techniques while you are taking classes at the online film school.

3D animation is given a digital skeletal structure by the animator. He/she then manipulates it using special software to do what they want it to do. This is called rigging. Other techniques can be applied, like giving it hair, fur or simulated fire and water. These applications fall under the heading of 3D dynamics.
