Contribution Of Last Few Decades In Indian Movie Industry
The era commonly associated with contemporary Indian movie industry is supposed to have begun in 1970's when commercial cinema came forth as a means of entertainment for the general public and this remains the case with the contemporary Indian movie industry today. In spite of some artistic movies being directed by directors like Govind Nihilani and Shyam Benegal, the commercial movies clearly emerged as the frontrunners and were the favored selection of producers as well.
The heavy commercialization of the movie industry continued in 1980's and 1990's. With the release of movies like Kayamat se Kayamat Tak, Chandni, Tezaab and Maine Pyaar Kiya in 1980's and Baazigar, DDLG and Darr in 1990's, the trend of romantic cinema held ground. These mushy movies were often love stories of young couples with a happy ending. Some of these movies were huge blockbusters and broke box office records.
The era of romantic cinema continued to last of 1990s and start of 2000s when movies like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam were big commercial blockbusters. Interestingly, the parallel cinema re-emerged by late 1990s as several movies including Traffic Signal, Chandni Bar and Satya received good critic reviews. Such new releases were a fresh change from the love stories that were being released every Friday and had a strong impact on the Bollywood movie fans.
Many movies with big budgets including Veer and Mein aur Mrs Khanna were flops, and surprisingly, DevD and other small budget movies have done well. This has lead to fresh and unique stories being favored among the Bollywood producers and directors.
The new trend in Hindi movie industry is to come up with novel storylines and concept. Recent movies like My Name is Khan and Three Idiots, which had novel story lines proved to be huge hits. The contemporary Indian movies are introducing the trend of making various kind of movies that is appreciated by today's Bollywood movie goers.
