Caribbean Music Legends
Bob Marley. Marley is undoubtedly the most famous musician from the Caribbean. The Jamaican legend's career really took off in the 70s through his own form of music which was a mixed form of reggae. He saw music as a chance to spread his message and many even see him as a musical messiah. He continues to be seen widespread not just within music but in popular culture as a whole such was his influence. He is admired by people from all backgrounds.
George Matthews. Born in Dominica, Matthews spent his childhood in New York and it was there where he launched his professional career. he recorded with some world-renowned musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald, Chuck Webb and Louis Armstrong. From the mid-1950s onwards, he worked as a freelance musician working with Ray Charles among others. He was essentially a big-band section performer but he also made several recordings with small groups.
Eddy Grant. Starting his career as the lead vocalist and guitarist in a band called The Equals in the 1960s, Eddy Grant went on to achieve chart success both as a member of The Equals and as a solo performer. He relocated to Barbados in the early 80s where he recorded new material as a solo artist including his signature tune, "Electric Avenue". In 1991, he hosted the first Caribbean Music Awards at The Apollo in New York City.
Wyclef Jean. After having shot to worldwide fame as a member of the Fugees, he followed lead singer Lauren Hill as a solo performer where he found success with his debut album, "The Carnival". He also wrote for other established artists such as Whitney Houston and on stage, his musical talent stretched to playing several instruments as well as rapping in several different languages.
Billy Ocean. A native of Trinidad, Billy Ocean has been in the UK practically his whole life after moving here at a mere eight years old. He began his musical career at an early age performing in London clubs in his teens. Whilst working for Ford motors, he was working on developing his musical career, writing and recording material with one of those tracks, "Love really Hurts Without You" being a huge success and enabling him to leave his job at Ford. His career went on from there with success upon success. He continues to tour today performing many of his classic hits.
