Famous people from Majorca
One of the Balearic Islands, found in the Mediterranean Sea, Majorca is the largest and second most populated Spanish island. The beautiful beaches combined with the booming night life on the south of the island means it brings in a huge amount of tourism, especially from the UK, Germany and Ireland. Unsurprisingly, then, many famous figures have lived on Majorca.
Majorca has been the home, and still is, to many famous people, and this is a brief mention of just a few names that will ring bells. In the 19th century there were people of great import who lived or were from Majorca. The military commander Joaquin Jovellar y Soler was one of them, and probably more famously, Antonio Maura Montaner who was twice the Spanish Prime Minister. More recently, however, there are many great sportsmen who live on the island including the tennis players Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya.
There are also artists and academics who have found their home on the island. The writer and philosopher Ramon Llull, for example, and the infamous Frdric Chopin even lived on the island for a while, as well as Joan Mir, the famous Spanish surrealist painter. More recently, the dance producer DJ Sammy lives on the island. Clearly, Majorca has had a great creative influence on the world in the 19th and 20th century.
Celebrities of modern times have also lived, and do live, on the island. In the latter part of the 90s Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones bought a home on Majorca and supposedly spend half the year there. Former Eurhythmics member Annie Lennox, the German model and actress Claudia Schiffer, as well as the former wife of John Lennon Cynthia Charles are all famous people who have at some time made a home of the island.
Turning my attention back to sports stars, Steve McManaman, who used to play football for England, Formula one racer Michael Schumacher, and the 250 cc world champion motorcyclist Jorg Martinez have also lived on Majorca. So many people who are famous have lived on Majorca, whether they were born or just moved there at some time, that it can't be ignored as a culturally important place.
