A rat seems to have driven me from one of my Rio de Janeiro apartments

By Simon Kennedy

To begin with, I must confess, the spot that I was dwelling can't truly be characterized as an apartment. I'm among those kinds of folks that needs to go so far off the beaten path that I can't find it again. Hotels and Apartments? Not really my bag. So obviously, when someone like me goes to travel to Rio de Janeiro I'm likely to face some special complications. Especially if you go to look at the kind of rentals I checked out. If you're taking unconventional actions, you are likely to have some unconventional problems, as I found out.

I had actually identified some flats situated in one of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. This particular favela was located in Copacabana, however it was also not far from Ipanema. While a lot of people would likely try to find hotels or apartments, I actually stumbled across this unique bit of real estate to be embedded in the culture. Funk parties, loud music, samba, cheap fireworks at all times of the day and night. If this is the holiday you seek out, then a favela is for you. If not, you may consider a different plan for your vacation.

As I shifted into my new accommodations, it wasn't a long time before I discovered I had an unanticipated guest. Or maybe you would refer to him as an invader. Though it can be argued as to who was the actual invader. I suppose to this rodent, I'd been actually encroaching on his territory. Possibly he was there long before I appeared. Also, this isn't really something that occurred to me while I was seeking flats and rentals in the local slums of Rio de Janeiro. But what else could you do?

A person might possibly ask, what's it like living with a rat? Well, most of us have had that roommate who is "that guy." You recognize the kind. The ones who make noise when you're attempting to sleep. They eat your food and don't tidy up their messes. Though I've got to acknowledge, when compared with other roommates in other apartments I've stayed in, this rodent was quite courteous. But on the other hand, the bar has been set low, very low.

Maybe next time I'll consent to the plan of staying in hotels. Though for the money, there's no way I would have gotten anyplace as close to Copacabana or Ipanema beach had I not relocated into some accommodations that might accept my furry four legged pal with a tail.
