An Actress Who Still Reins The Hearts - Madhubala
Right from the year she appeared in front of the movie camera, Mumtaz Jehan Begum, widely recognized by her on-screen name Madhubala, was fated to be known as a star and rule millions. However she could not enjoy her fame for enough time as she was constantly weakened by poor health and personal issues. But several consider her as the prettiest actress to grace Bollywood.
Born 14th February 1933, Mumtaz was the 5th among 11 siblings. Her first entry in movies was as a child artist when she became nine, in the 1942 movie Basant, directed by Amiya Chakravarty. In coming years, she acted in a lot of children's movies. Kidar Sharma, one of the leading directors of the time, offered her first lead role alongside Raj Kapoor in 'Neel Kamal' when she was 14. But she was known nationwide with the release of Mahal in 1949, which also boosted the career in music industry of Lata Mangeshkar, playback singer. By that time, public recognized Mumtaz only by the name Madhubala.
Her ailment was known to everybody when she was in the sets of a movie in 1950 - she was found to have a heart problem, more commonly, a hole in her heart. She was also involved in a serious but tragic relation with Dilip Kumar. In the first half of 1950's, she acted in many popular movies such as Badal, Saiyan, Taraana and Aaram. She also proved skilled at playing comedy characters by playing the main character opposite Guru Dutt in the film 'Mr and Mrs '55'.
During the second half of 1950s, her mass appeal crashed as many movies failed to entertain the audience. Apart from the career turmoil, she was also saddened personally when her courtship with Dilip Kumar painfully ended. She also got dragged in a court case with B R Chopra. This added up to the worsening health.
But she re-surfaced with some captivating performances in Howrah Bridge, Phagun, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Kala Pani, all of them super hits in the year 1958. She acted with her to-be life partner Kishore Kumar in the film Chalti ka Naam Gaadi. However her popularity grew many folds after Mughal-E-Azam (1960), directed by K Asif, was released. It was in the same year that Madhubala- Kishore marriage took place, which was ended as another painful event.
Coming years saw her body giving up and she was admitted in a hospital in London for medication. But, medical experts predicted she will not be surviving for long and the surgery proved futile. As a result of failing health, her movie career dwindled until she gave up to her illness on the 23rd of February, aged 36.
