Make Amazing Rhythms With Funk Drum Loops

By Travis Buzzell

It isn't that easy to construct fresh sounding, exciting beats. A lot of today's music features very crisp, almost mechanical rhythm structures. If you want your beats to stand apart, play around with some funk drum loops.

You know what they sound like. Fat, head bouncing beats that make you think of Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube. Many of these tracks are based on Parliament samples, and they provide a thudding pulse for the groove to ride. You can watch your listeners' heads snap back in time to the body controlling rhythms by trying some of what George Clinton was trying.

If you are looking for an easy and reliable source of samples, you can't go wrong with Parliament. Focus particularly on the interaction between Bootsy Collins on the bass and Jerome "Bigfoot" Brailey's stint on drums.

You can find samples anywhere. There is a substantial portion of the James Brown discography which bears extensive sampling, for instance. And don't forget the Solid Gold era, with artists like Luther Vandross, Barry White, and Stevie Wonder.

It's not hard to incorporate these samples into your own mixes. They are, by their very nature, big, open rhythms accenting the very basic one and three beats. With a bit of tweaking you can fit them anywhere. You can blend more than one together, but it can be tricky. For a series of good examples, listen to earlier Ice Cube.

Instead of trying to compete with the already boring mainstream and its mechanical sounds, try moving in the opposite direction. Go to a low fidelity sound that brings the human elements back. Funk drum loops have sounded great for more than forty years in some cases. Use them wisely, for they are powerful things.
