Steelers Top Jets To Progress To Super Bowl
The Pittsburgh Steelers will make their eighth appearance in the Super Bowl this season thanks to a hard fought 24-19 victory over the New York Jets in the AFC Championship on Sunday. The Steelers built a 24-3 halftime lead but had to hold off a furious Jets' comeback effort in the second half to preserve the victory. Rashard Mendenhall ran for 121 yards and a touchdown as he had little trouble with the Jets' vaunted rushing defense. Pittsburgh will face the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV on February 6 in Dallas, Texas.
NFL betting fans who backed the Steelers as -4' point home favorites had some nervous moments delayed in the game, but Pittsburgh finally managed to hold on and cover the number. The triumph improved Pittsburgh's record beside the spread to 12-6 on the season. The 43 combined points scored went OVER the posted total of 38. The Steelers evened their NFL totals record with 9 OV and 9 UN. In spite of their reputation built on tough defensive play, Pittsburgh has been a power OVER team during the NFL post season. They've now gone OVER in 5 straight playoff games and 19 of 27 ever since 1992.
Ben Roethlisberger didn't have an especially effective game, but that didn't diminish his happiness at returning to the Super Bowl:
"Any time you get to the Super Bowl, it feels good. I don't care what you're going through or what's going on. We put a lot of stuff behind us early and found a way. It's not always pretty with us but we do the job. We have a lot of tenacity. We have a don't quit attitude and mentality. Everybody is just always there for each other."
Defensive standout Troy Polamalu echoed Roethlisberger's sentiments:
"We overcame a lot more obstacles this year than we have a long time ago. But we still got one more to go."
New York Jets' coach Rex Ryan gave his players credit for playing a good second half after a dismal start, but observed that it wasn't enough:
"We played a good half. We never played a good game, and that was the variation. You get to this point, you've got to play a wonderful game against a great opponent and we played a good half and that was it."
The Steelers will experiment to include to their record 6 Super Bowl championships this year, and their 8th appearance ties the record held by the Dallas Cowboys. Pittsburgh is now a +2' point underdog to the Green Bay Packers, with the total set at 46.
