Packers Rip Falcons To Improve To Nfc Championship Game

By Daniel Scott

The Atlanta Falcons stopped the common period with the second best record in the NFL. That is no doubt small consolation for the fact that they'll be watching the NFC Conference Championship and Super Bowl from home. The Falcons were overwhelmed by the visiting Green Bay Packers on Saturday en send to a lopsided 48-21 loss at the Georgia Dome. The Falcons entered the game as one of the league's best home players and held a 14-7 lead initially in the second quarter before the Packers exploded for 35 unanswered points. Green Bay will take on their longtime opponents the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field this Sunday for the right to play in the Super Bowl.

Green Bay easily 'brought home the bacon' for NFL point spread players with the blowout victory as +2' point road underdogs. The Packers improved their ATS record to 11-7 overall and 6-4 ATS on the road. They also have an impressive 5-2 SU/ATS mark against opponents with winning records. The 69 combined points scored sailed OVER the posted total of 44. It was only the second OVER for the Packers in 10 road games this season and 7th in 18 games overall.

The Packers are playing their most excellent football of the season at just the right time, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers couldn't be happier after throwing for 366 yards and leading his team to their highest scoring playoff game in franchise story:

"This just feels so good right now. This probably was my best performance -- the stage we were on, the importance of this game. It was a good night. It was one of those nights. I felt like I was in the zone"

Atlanta had been on an impressive run on their home field. Since Mike Smith took over as head trainer in 2008 the Falcons had gone 20-4 SU/16-8 ATS at home compromising 7-1 SU/5-3 ATS this year. With Matt Ryan at quarterback, the Falcons were on a 17-1 SU run at the Georgia Dome. They'd also been dependable favorite in all choices, going 10-4 ATS this year and 19-9 ATS as chalk since 2008. They sure didn't look like a central home team on Saturday, and all QB Ryan could do was declare his disappointment with the outcome:

"Anytime you're in the playoffs, you have an opportunity to win it all. When that doesn't happen, it's frustrating."

Coach Ryan tried to frame it as a learning experience and pointed to the considerable success the team had during the regular season:

"I know they're disappointed. I'm disappointed. We're all disappointed. But we will learn from it. That's the important thing. We will learn from what took place this evening. I also told 'em, as bad as they feel right now, remember the whole body of work we put out there this year. We can't forget that either."

Green Bay will now take a trip to Chicago with a Super Bowl berth on the line. The Packers have been installed as -3' point road preferred with the total set at 43'. Green Bay has won and covered four of their last six games alongside the Bears, with all six going UNDER the total.
