Making Sense of On-Demand Streaming Technologies

By Anne Madison

Have you heard about video streaming, but are not sure if it is an activity you should try? Many folks are wondering the same thing as streaming service providers like Hulu and Netflix are becoming more mainstream. Determining what these services offer and if they are a good fit for you is the goal of this article.

Most of us, when we think of home entertainment, think of our satellite or cable TV subscription, with premium channels to HBO, Cinemax, Starz, etc. We pay our monthly subscription that in general costs us $50 - $125 per month to get unlimited access to the channels available in our plan.

If there were a way to get the majority of the same movies and shows for quite a bit less every month, would you be interested? That's where streaming service providers save the day. These providers offer a way for you to access all of your favorite programming over your internet connection for under $15 every month. With one or two plans, you will likely meet most of your goals in home entertainment.

Understandably, most folks are reticent to embrace a new technology until they can really grasp it. They also need to be reassured that setup costs won't cost an arm and a leg, and that it will be simple to execute and maintain. Information is crucial to helping people adopt this technology.

Live feeds are one way that streaming takes place. This type of streaming usually happens for important events, and even reality television shows are providing the ability to see what's happening 24 hours a day, not just when the actual episode is taped. Otherwise, movies and television shows are delivered over the 'net through a compressed file that you can view once it is downloaded.

You can select a service that provides rental or purchase options of movies or games, or you can select a subscription for unlimited downloads of any content they offer. Of course, consumers used to buy content through DVDs which needed to be burned, packaged and shipped, which is why costs were so much more than they are through these new streaming services. Plus, there isn't a middle many anymore, because you receive your content direct from the stream service.

You can buy a media player like Roku or Tivo to connect your TV set and broadband connection together and stream the content to your television set. This is very cost-effective. Also, if you own a blu-ray player, an internet-enabled TV set or a game console, it is quite easy to get your streaming subscription up and working through one of these supported devices.

The possibilities are endless with streaming services. Perhaps you wish to drive the cost of your cable TV subscription down and enhance it with one of these services. It would also be a perfect gift for a college student while away at the dorm.
