Music From Around The World

By Shelly Clayton

music from around the world is influenced by the history of various cultures, creating a unique rhythm or beat for a region and using specific instruments to create a recognizable sound.

Spanish and African cultures have been very influential in the development of sounds found in the Caribbean and South America. With roots in historical tribes such as the Inca, Aztec or Maya, Central and South American music tend to be very rhythmic and fast-paced, with multiple levels and highlights. Some examples of this are the salsa, samba and rumba genres.

As well as African and Spanish influences, the Caribbean styles have been influenced by settlers from India, France and Britain that migrated to this side of the world over the years. The variety in the genres of separate islands blend together to create what is known as the Caribbean vibe. Soca, calypso, zouk, dancehall and the ever-popular reggae are some of the celebrated sounds, and Carnival is a time when rhythm is most prominent throughout the region.

America is home to jazz, blues and rock 'n' roll. It too has been molded by the diversity of people, especially by the widespread African-American culture as a result of the slave trade.

In Europe, there is an appreciation for the elegantly classical such as opera, but newer styles are becoming more and more popular in the past few decades with the rebellion of youth culture, leading to the development of dance and techno music, as well as a British strand of rock, pop and urban styles.

Oriental Asian tones are meditative and mellow, with very soft sounds reflecting harmony. The melodies are graceful and relaxing as they take their time throughout each song. Indian music is similar in that it is very closely linked to the culture and its faith. The sitar is unique to this region, with a very specific sound. There are also very fun, upbeat Bollywood sounds, which are accompanied by colorful group dances.
