Vedic Astrology - Empowering the Goddess Inside

By Ganesh Kevin

From the Vedic tradition the Gods and Goddesses all represent a variety of aspects in the one stream of consciousness. Each God or Goddess represents different aspects or attributes of our true nature or Self. In devotional practices including Bhakti Yoga, it may seem that the devotee is worshiping an external Goddess or image. In absolute truth, there is no separation in between the divine attributes on the Goddess that we worship and our actual nature. Over a human level, though, any in the attributes with the Goddess that we now have disowned may be projected onto others (whether God, Goddess or human!)

For most men and women it is much easier to "own" the softer attributes with the Goddess; unconditional love, compassion, acceptance, grace, nurturance and divine protection. These qualities are demonstrated from the Vedic tradition via Saraswati, the Goddess of Wisdom, Lakshmi, the Goddess of Abundance, and Parvati, the Divine Mother herself. For Buddhist practitioners, the Goddesses Tara and Kuan Yin are often worshiped to bring out these same attributes.

In Vedic Astrology, attunement for the "softer" side with the Goddess is noticed inside the chart primarily from aspects in between the Moon/Neptune and Venus/Neptune. As I said in my last article, Venus/Neptune aspects in a chart indicate that the individual is learning to be an agent or vessel of unconditional love, and Moon/ Neptune aspects indicate a longing for oneness and unity. The challenge with these aspects is that they are usually experienced in their lower manifestation, particularly in relationships. This could include difficulties of co-dependence, unhealthy merging, lack of boundaries and "other" centeredness at the expense of your Self.

In order to empower the fullness in the Goddess in all her attributes it's necessary for getting to know the fierce aspect of the Goddess as well, namely Kali or Durga. Kali and Durga, or Chinnamasta and Bhairavi inside Buddhist traditions, represent the power on the Goddess to destroy illusion. To be able to manifest the fierce energies in the Goddess requires a willingness to speak the reality without distortion. One of my teachers is fond of saying that "the simple fact will set you free, but first, it will piss you off!" The challenge with manifesting the fierce aspects in the Goddess is that it takes skill and clarity to deliver the reality with no wounding others. That is specially true if one's reality has been suppressed.

When one's reality has been suppressed, it is virtually guaranteed that when it comes out it is going to be distorted by the emotions. Once, once I was working with a buyer who had a short temper and would usually "blow individuals away" with his truth, I received a divine equation that I think is worth sharing to illustrate the point. The equation is D=T-W+C! The translation is Dogmatism = Fact - Wisdom and Compassion! To be able to deliver ones reality it takes a skillful blend of wisdom and compassion. In other words, truth, delivered with wisdom and compassion might indeed "piss other's off" at very first but it'll eventually be received because there is no-thing to defend against.

In Vedic Astrology, we see Kali inside the chart particularly via aspects among Moon, Mercury, or Venus with Pluto. Pluto may be the planet that represents the destruction of illusion and brings on the surface anything that is hidden or illusory. Moon/Pluto aspects indicate the "truth-teller" or "whistle-blower" who includes a strong, instinctive "B.S." detector that knows the simple fact even if others are in denial. Mercury/Pluto aspects reveal an incisive mind that needs to cut away illusion so healing can begin. And lastly, Venus/Pluto aspects speak of strong convictions and passion for ones fact even if it is not "pretty."

Ultimately, it is from the acceptance of our fierceness (Pluto) with our compassion (Neptune) that the fullness with the Goddess is integrated in our lives. As we accept the power on the Goddess in her fierce form and clear the distortions of suppressed emotions, we can then skillfully deliver the truth with wisdom, adore and compassion. Integrating the fullness from the Goddess in her compassionate and fierce forms also allows us to integrate a new type of empowerment that doesn't need sacrifice from the truth. This ways that we can transcend the old stereotypes of "be nice or do not say a thing at all" and come into a brand new integration of simple fact and compassion in all of our communications.
