Halloween Decorations - Making Your Own

By Jennifer Ashe

Halloween is an occasion that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. Most events and parties are for either children or grown ups. It rarely happens that all age groups can celebrate together. In this article we will focus on home made Halloween decorations and how to involve your children when making them.

Not all parents are the "arty crafty" type and the idea of making Halloween decorations sends them into a cold sweat. If you are that type of parent then there are plenty of other family activities that you can organise. Our advice is, do what you are comfortable with and that way everyone will enjoy themselves. Purchasing Halloween decorations online is easy and it won't break the bank.

When it comes to making Halloween decorations or indeed decorations for any occasion preparation is vital. The last thing you want is to be scrambling around looking for the craft supplies as the children get restless. You can be sure you will use items such as glue, coloured card, paint, markers and safety scissors so make sure you have the basic equipment ready to go.

No matter what theme or design you want to use for your Halloween decorations you will need templates. Drawing the outline of a design freehand is something only the most talented can do, so do yourself a favor and download a free template from the internet. You will have no problem finding templates for ghosts, bats, spiders and zombies.

Outdoor decorations are just as important as indoor versions at Halloween. Before you finalise the items you are going to make ensure that they are weatherproof if they are to be used outdoors. There is no point making decorations if they are going to dissolve in heavy rain.

So now onto some specific ideas. In our opinion you cannot go wrong with decorating a pumpkin. They are part and parcel of Halloween decorations and most homes will have a well light pumpkin in their window or porch. The big advantage of focusing on a pumpkin is that children of all ages can have a go and you do not have to stick to one side of the pumpkin. You can have different faces on different sides.

Before decorating the pumpkin make sure you select one that is nice and smooth. It will help when trying to draw a design on it. Don't forget to cut the top off and scrape out the inside. When cleaning out the pumpkin leave about 1/2" on the inside. You will need the pumpkin to remain rigid.

Pumpkins do not have to last a long time. They are usually prepared the week before Halloween and are left up for a few days after Halloween night. Even so it is a good idea to apply a base coat of orange paint. This is not so important if you are carving a face on the pumpkin but if you are drawing a design then having a well prepared and smooth surface will help make you design stand out.

When choosing a design to trace onto the pumpkin stick to something simple. For example a basic outline of a ghost or a bat. Older children may want something a little more complicated but start with the assumption that simple and easy is good and anything complicated should be avoided.

There is no end to the number and type of Halloween decorations you can make. Another idea that is relatively easy to do is candle decorating. Just as with decorating a pumpkin get a nice smooth pillar candle in either black or orange. The bigger the better. You can then follow the same system of tracing a design onto the candle using a template downloaded from the internet. It is then just a matter of colouring between the lines. For best effect you should dig down a few mm into the candle so the design will stand out.

When planning to make Halloween decorations try not to focus on the "perfect outcome". When young children are involved don't worry about how the decorations look. As long as everyone enjoys themselves you can consider the activity a success. More than likely you will end up doing most of the work yourself.

Perhaps after reading this article the whole process of making Halloween decorations seems like too much work. If that is the case don't worry. There are plenty of other options. Buying decorations online is very easy and relatively cheap. Hanging spiders, scene setters and tombstones can all be used to transform you home.
