This Year, the Christmas Nativity Play Was My Responsibility

By Aaron Vincett

This year for Christmas I was in charge of putting on the Christmas play. It is a tradition in our town to put on a Christmas Play every year in order to have a place to feel the Christmas spirit. What most people don't know is what an intensive process putting on a Christmas Play can be, especially if you don't have any previous play planning. Luckily for me I had the play all picked out, and plans on how to make this Christmas play the best one yet.

Of all the Christmas Plays that I had to pick from, I chose my very favorite and a Christmas Classic: The Christmas Carol. This is always a good Christmas play to choose because it is well known, cast flexible, and it can have a simple interior and simple exterior set. After deciding the play to be put on, I went right to work preparing.

There were, of course, many people that tried out to be in the Christmas play. Many of the cast that tried out, though, could only be a part of the Christmas Play part of the time. The Christmas Carol was cast flexible, though, so the cast could be there one night and spend Christmas time with their family the next. Christmas plays have to be careful that way, though, because Christmas is a time to be spent with family.

The Christmas play set took me only minutes to decide how to go about designing it, but the simple interior and simple exterior set that I had thought up took much more than just minutes to actually acquire and build. Set time, in the end, took much longer than I would have hoped, but it was worth it. The interior was beautiful, though the simple interior set ended up not being so simple. The Simple exterior set was easily put together and that set also turned out very well. This play was going to be spectacular.

The longest, most time consuming part of the Christmas play was the time it took for the cast to learn their parts of the play. I was so proud, though, that all of them could keep their mind on the Christmas play even with Christmas in the air. Christmas time is an easy time to get distracted. There is a reason why I do not play a part in the Christmas Play. For one thing, lines that would only take minutes in the play would take me much more time to learn. The second is that I am way to easily distracted to play a part in the Christmas Play!

All in all the Christmas Play ended up amazing. All of the cast learned their parts perfectly and the set time for the play to last was exactly right. Although the time it took to prepare for the Christmas play was more than just minutes here and minutes there, it was worth it. And the set, after we had finished our Christmas play, went on to be donated to a school so they could put on their own Christmas Play! If you are thinking about putting on a Christmas play, don't think about how much time it will take to put together a cast and build a simple interior and simple exterior set; think about how much fun you'll have doing it!
