Watch My TV On My Computer

By Coleen Kayne

We cannot deny the convenience that modern technology has provided to our everyday lives. The World Wide Web, for instance, has given us easy access to communication, information, and even entertainment. Internet TV has been, in fact, a growing fad these days. Now if you're one of the people who keep asking "how can I watch my TV on my computer", then what you should do is to keep reading.

What you need first and foremost in order to watch television on your computer is the right device. A TV tuner card is one such device that enables users to watch television on their computer. A TV tuner card allows television signals to be received by the computer, and it also permits the recording of programs in the computer's hard disk.

TV tuner cards may come in two forms - external or internal. Also, there are mainly two types of tuner cards - digital and analog. A digital TV tuner card broadcasts the program in the MPEG2 format, thereby eliminating the need for any encoder. It can either broadcast the whole program or separate the audio and video. Depending on the user's needs, these tuners can rewind or fast-forward the program. Some even allow the users to divide the computer screen so that they can watch more than one program all at the same time.

An analog TV tuner card, on the other hand, outputs a raw video stream that is suitable for real-time viewing but ideally requiring some sort of compression if it is to be recorded. The analog type is cheaper as compared to digital TV tuners. But as mentioned, analog TV tuner cards cannot broadcast the program in the JPEG motion or MPEG format, and unlike digital tuners that do not need any form of compression, does not relieve the CPU from any load.

There's also the hybrid type, which has one tuner that can be configured to act as an analog tuner or a digital tuner. Such a device is more expensive but it comes with a number of features. The latest TV tuner, for example, comes with a flash memory which helps it to decode various types of video formats. The problem with hybrid tuners, though, is that switching between the systems cannot be done immediately. In other words, the card operates as a digital tuner or an analog tuner until reconfigured.

This, now, answers the question "how to watch my TV on my computer".
