By Debora Marques

Independent of the Carnival, the New Year's Bash is also a significant part of the festivals in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. Most popular amongst them is the special event on Copacabana beach which attracts a large number of visitors each and every year. A major part of this event is the eye catching fireworks display. The display which goes on for around 30 minutes is a definite joy to observe.

Hotels, rio apartments plus the entire city are generally lit up with decorations and a variety of displays. Shows and other enjoyment functions are planned to celebrate the party. People throng the streets and enjoy the fireworks. Popping a bottle of chilled Champagne as the clock hits midnight is recognized to be a provider of luck.

The world renowned Rio de Janeiro Carnival includes a history of over two hundred years old. Grounded in both pagan and religious celebrations, the carnival is commemorated during the four days prior to the starting of Lent. The Rio Carnival has always been the principal appeal amongst tourists. Irrespective of all the carnivals that occur in Brazil, it's Rio de Janeiro which is referred to as Carnival capital of the world.

The celebration starts off on a Saturday, forty days before Easter concludes on a Fat Tuesday, after which Easter begins on Wednesday. The festival is celebrated within the month of February, sometimes March, which usually can be the hottest period in Rio.

The Rio Carnival, as we know it nowadays, was created in an attempt to make the parties a lot more civilized in the way of European carnivals. Face masks and vibrant costumes were presented by the higher classes who paraded them around the city avenues in their open carriages. The carnival also is similar to celebrations with drinks, food and music that carry on throughout the day and into the early hrs of the morning.

Men and women emerge from their Hotels and rio de janeiro apartments onto the streets and dance and sing, and all this finally finishes in what is known as the Samba Parade. People participating in the Samba parade are dressed up in dazzling outfits and Samba dancers conduct the world famous Latin dance forms.
