A Little Background On The Term Redneck
Redneck is an offensive slang term that was first used to denote poor Caucasian Southerners in the United States. The term is historically utilized from the sun stained necks of Southern farmers and workers who spent most of their time predominantly outside. Lately the word has expanded its description to include the racist and backwards ways of white conservatives and segregationists.
In the beginning of the nineteen hundreds, it was a normal term which was used to denote the beliefs of the South's mostly poor laborers. Back then the word was utilized by the men themselves, who proudly utilized it at their political rallies and union rep meetings.
The United Mine Workers of America both adopted and welcomed the term. They even began wearing recognizable red bandannas around their necks to rallies and meetings. In fact, during a good portion of the twenties and thirties, the word had become almost synonymous with union members and strikers. Many linguists believe that this development of the word happened simultaneously and independently of the first one.
However, by the early seventies the term had become an offensive bit of slang and was used to describe anyone who opposed modern ways and harbored bigoted and racist views. It was an especially appropriate term when it was used to denote the pro segregationists and equal rights detractors of the period.
Today even, the term is not exactly derogatory when it's used to describe citizens with an out of date view system. Such people, like those who advocate against gay marriage and rights, are unfortunately large in number.
Currently though, there are still people who proudly describe themselves as being rednecks and would not have it any other way. They own camouflaged colored shirts and pants that feature the word and name so called 'blue collar' comedians as their favorite celebrities. To these people, the word is in now way derogatory.
