Popular Areas of the Peak District - Matlock Bath
Matlock Bath, at the south east tip of the Peak District is a perfectly located pretty village, popular with tourists and families. The scenery here is stunning and because the village is a designated conservation area a great deal has being done to conserve and protect the buildings from decline. Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and a deep gorge, the village shares many superb attractions with nearby Matlock. Often described as the 'Switzerland of England', the area is home to cable cars, caves and even a theme park.
History of the village- Matlock Bath is a unique village south of Matlock in Derbyshire, built alongside the River Derwent in a steep and beautiful gorge. The warm springs, discovered in the late 1600s brought prosperity to the area, and the Bath House was constructed.
Matlock Bath has always attracted tourism because of its natural beauty. The Parish Council, while encouraging tourism, will always lobby to ensure that the natural beauty of the area is not compromised. Once a society spa town now developed its inland 'seaside' resort image that it still carries today. Perfect for families looking for an English holiday village in lovely surroundings.
The rocky face of High Tor dominates the skyline around Matlock Bath, and the area draws plenty of walking and climbing enthusiasts. The winding river Derwent is equally as popular a draw, for picnics and boat rides. Be sure to ride the steam train between Matlock Riverside and Rowsley South for a nostalgic afternoon.
Riber Castle is a 19th century Grade II listed country house situated in the hamlet of Riber on a hill overlooking Matlock, Derbyshire. It was built by John Smedley in 1862 as his private home and his wife lived in it until her death. It's built in a gothic style and is an interesting spot if only for its eerie atmosphere that surrounds it!
One of many of the things Matlock Bath does very well is attractions. There are many places to choose from including great museums such as Life through a lens and a lead mining museum. There is also a countryside centre, and the very popular Abraham Heights (which is complete with a cable car ride) and the fun theme park Gulliver's Kingdom.
