Reasons Why You Shouldn't Keep a Monkey for a Pet
Many people have the idea that a monkey would make a good pet but this might not be thought out properly. Just because it looks cool in movies, it doesn't mean that it would work in real life.
It's not to say that a monkey wouldn't theoretically make a good pet. They are very smart and can be trained to do many things that you might not expect.
However, that doesn't mean you are qualified to bring one home just because it would be fun. It can lead to serious problems and isn't necessarily the best thing for the monkey.
This is of course not even discussing the legal issues with bringing such an animal into your home. And the fact that they can be violent at times especially when they get older.
Many people think that they can treat a monkey like their own child. But even if this can be fun for the owner, it is unfair to the monkey itself to be in this type of environment.
When you remove a monkey from it's environment, it often develops behavioral problems due to the detachment from other monkeys. And it makes it very difficult to mix back in with other monkeys in the future.
Monkeys have their own needs and when they are just with humans all the time, they are not being met. So this isn't necessarily fair to the monkey.
It might be cute to have a monkey around for a little while. But it can be very challenging to care for these animals for long periods of time and that is not even considering the effect it has on the animal itself.
So even if you think you can make a great monkey owner you might want to reconsider. Maybe stick to a simpler pet like a cat or a dog.
