Since the 1970s abstract painting has been a part of fine art periods and has found its way into the present. It is clear that it will remain a part of the art world for as long as there is art in the real sense of the word. In the present it has been called contemporary abstract paintings as this is where this painting style is currently being created.
Most people (especially young artists) believe that anyone can create an abstract painting. The truth of the matter is that it is a more difficult task to accomplish than your realistic painting. This is simply for the fact that it needs more depth of expression than the more realistic expression. Hence, this type of art will always be called contemporary as it happens in the time frame of when you live, but the medium would determine in which century you find yourself.
It is not an easy style as you still need to follow fine art principles to be able to present a piece of work which is visually most effective. Even though the images can be anything (and the story about anything), it still has to convey a clear message and evoke emotions in the viewer.
This is done with imagery which does just that. It would do you well to have learnt the basics of drawing at least. This would make it that much easier to distort and create abstract images or imagery.
All this lies in the preparation stages of your painting. It would be more effective if you could write about, research and especially to keep a diary of any visuals you would like to use in the future. This is what makes this style of painting much more interesting and more difficult and time consuming. You have to prepare yourself for when you finally start to paint.
