Signed Jerseys And Where To Buy Them

By Adriana Noton

Signed jerseys are sought after for many different reasons. If you have a favourite player they are often a good way of showing your personal love for them and their achievements. You may also get them with the team signing it as a tribute to the team and to what they have achieved together.

Other people purchase them as gifts for friends and family if they know they like a certain player. For some people if the item is sought after enough then they may purchase it as a future investment. While it is a morbid suggestion some people often buy signed items from older players that will often go up in value after they retire or die.

Various factors can affect how much a jersey is sold for. One contentious area is whether or not the signature on the jersey is real or fake. A lot of companies and private sellers may claim to have a certificate of authenticity. This should not be something you consider when making a purchase.

Some people think they can spot a false signature by the way that it looks. There is a simple practical exercise to illustrate why this is not always the case. Take a pen and a piece of paper and write out your signature quickly four or five times. Then compare it to your signature on a form or credit card. The likelihood is your signature will look slightly different every time.

People sometimes think that if a signature looks different to a previous one then it has to be a fake. This is not necessarily the case as circumstances may mean that people are in a hurry and therefore rush the signature, though this is less likely with official merchandise. In some cases a signature may change over time, with some signatures from earlier in their playing career looking different from those toward the end.

Ideally when purchasing a signed jersey you should get one that is framed. Check to see what kind of materials they use. You should get one that is in glass and the glass should at no point touch the signature. It is advised to keep them out of direct sunlight and if you have a glass display case you should place them inside.

If you are lucky enough to get a signature directly from the player themselves then it is best to get a photograph with them as well. If you want to sell on the item in future then make sure the signature is not dedicated to you. Even general dedications such as to a future star and so forth can reduce the value of an item to a potential purchaser.

Signed jerseys and other hockey memorabilia can be a great item for collecting as well as for preserving significant moments in sporting history. If you have any items like this at home you can get them valued at auction houses or by seeking independent dealers and asking their value. You can also look online to find official merchandise and memorabilia stores to get authentic signed memorabilia.
