An Approach to Getting Started in Poker

By Thomas Kearns

No matter your intended goal when you start out your poker life, you should begin by playing several types of poker to see which of them suit your natural inclinations, then learn all you can about them and play, play, play. Pay attention to which of the games you do your best in with ease and enjoyment. If a game comes naturally to you, you will learn and improve to peak potential and have fun (and win money) along the way.

Some games are definitely easier to learn than others. One of the easiest to learn and most popular is hold'em poker. For one thing, there is much literature on the subject as well as blog sites and forums online and general conversation around the casino tables.

However, this is no more than a convenient means of introduction to poker. The fact that Texas Holdem is the most popular game in casinos and online does not mean that you will do well in the game. There may be something of a Hollywood effect about Texas Holdem: some people like to believe that because of the popular status of the game, Texas Holdem will, as it were, discover them and mail their fortune overnight.

If your purpose is to simply try any one game without applying much effort to improve or to learn other varieties, than you may as well begin with Holdem. But if you are looking for a way to approach poker as a broad and complex field of creative endeavor, the best way is simply to go forth into the world of poker on your own, looking for fortune. As long as you keep your head about you and don't loose your last cent in your first round, you will do well to try many types of games.

This way, you will learn about many forms of poker and can zero in on those you excel in and enjoy without being overwhelmed by too much education too soon. As a beginner, your powers of observation are keenest because of the fun and novelty of your situation. Becoming good at something by yourself through your own experience will make you a proud, purposeful poker player.

And when afterwards you settle down and begin to specialize and learn from the books, you will know already what of the vast amount of material to look for, what to agree with, and what to ignore. By then you will not only be in command of some of the basics, you will have learned by then to make unconventional insights into the game. You will be able to perfect your skills by practice and reading, but you will also have learned from experience how to observe that which your opponents are not looking out for.

When you can observe accurately your opponent's weak points, you can make educated, original decisions on how to play poker with them most advantageously for you.
