The Incredible Accomplishment of Doc Ellis

By Luke Ridley

Dock Ellis is a pitcher who isn't known by many baseball fans, though those who do know him probably know what this story will involve. In 1970, Ellis threw a no-hitter under the most extraordinary circumstances. He no-hit his opposition when he had taken LSD just a few hours before.

The funny thing is, it was not until 14 years later that we were told what made his no-hitter infamous: he was under the influence of LSD. Even more ironic about this all is the fact that he was working for an anti-drug program at the time when he finally admitted it.

Ellis by no means took LSD on purpose before the game. Had he known he was scheduled to start that day, he never would have taken the drugs. However, Ellis thought that it was his day off, and had decided to take the drugs with the knowledge that he wouldn't pitch until later that week. This was a major blunder, as he soon learned that it was his day to pitch.

As far as the game goes, Ellis really doesn't remember much of what happened. He says that all of his attention was on his catcher. Ellis was extremely wild during this game. He hit a few of his opponents and walked some batters. Somehow, they couldn't hit his pitches either.

Sometimes he couldn't even remember the score of the game or what part of the inning the game was in. When a few balls were hit in his direction, he jumped away from them as if he was scared.

As amazing as Ellis's accomplishment is, this can't be praised. No professional athlete should be taking drugs, especially one who had worked with children telling them not to take drugs. Nonetheless, this is a story that people will talk about for a long time.

Ellis holds a record, but it's a notorious one. While the idea of it is amusing, we should all hope that nothing like this ever happens again.
