Flying Inflatables? Tips for Ensuring the Safety of Your Inflatable Games

By Paul Gilbert

Recently a scary incident occurred where inflatables took off into the air with some kids inside! It was terrifying but the good news is no one was injured. However, it makes us wonder how safe inflatables really are.

Just like other entertainment rides inflatables are to be used with common sense and responsibility. You have to know how these games are required to be operated. That is the very reason for safety instructions that are given upon the start of the ride.

You'd be amazed at how many times we delivery bounces houses to someone's back yard and have gone over the operation instructions, only to find out when we came back for delivery that very little of the instructions were followed.

Here's an example...a beautiful home with a pool and a bounce house can show the importance of safety procedures. While the bounce was set-up, instructions were laid down to kids and parents signifying the risk involved with inflatables minus an adult attendant. During that time, the driver heard the owner tell the kids to stay out of the pool because no one was there to supervise them. Ironically, when the driver came to pick up the inflatable, 8 kids were bouncing in the unit with no adult even outside.

The truth of the matter is, inflatables are safe, if the instructions are followed correctly.

Since we have mentioned the swimming pool incident, please heed this other reminder as well. Kids swimming in the pool are not supposed to go running inside the bounce house. Wet bounce houses cause the base to be slippery and that may cause accidents. This is not applicable to waterslides, however. Waterslides have different materials and are manufactured to be slippery with water. People expect the water slide to be slippery , so they take extra precaution.s

Operating and setting up inflatables has been our forte for the past years and so far, we have an excellent record as far as safety is concerned with no accidents at all. But we follow the following safety tips.

1) Inflatables should NEVER be operated in winds over 25 mph. If the winds are gusty at a lower windspeed, be safe...shut the inflatable down.

2) Inflatables have to be staked and installed properly. The attendant has to check around it to make sure everything is secure.

3) NEVER operate an inflatable without an adult attendant at the door. This doesn't mean someone standing 20′ away keeping an eye on things.

4) "Like" sizes should jump together

5) 3 minutes is long enough to jump when it's hot out. Put in few kids for a shorter time for safety.

6) When it starts raining, deflate the inflatable to keep the kids away from it while raining.

7) The bounce house should be situated near a power source to avoid wires and power cords to be unplugged from the outlet, causing the inflatable to deflate instantly.

8) Make sure the adult attendant has been trained in proper emergency procedures, not just inflatable safety.

A sense of responsibility, discretion and common sense is the biggest factor to be able to say that inflatables, after all are still the safest recreational equipment available.
