Prepare For 1970s Kaleidoscope Festival Fashion

By Catherine Tweedy

While we all hope the sun will be a regular guest this season, if weather does disappoint at least women's designer fashion will be shining, with dazzling neon to shock, colour blocking to excite the eyes and loud patterns to assault the senses this season.

Two of the biggest themes this season head back to nature with the seafaring nautical theme sailing back into fashion and animal prints and snake-skins taking pride of place; the wildly colourful 70s will also be making an appearance this summer. The countryside in summer is reflected in many of the cuts and tones being used in lines this season, reflecting the dreamy sunshine of the British summer. Bathe in the simple, earthy pleasure of the summer festival, the power of the crowd, the adventure of camping and the energy of music, embodying the spirit of Woodstock and Glastonbury in fashion and in spirit.

The revival of the summer festival has seen fashion taken out of its traditional setting as muddy shoes get placed on red carpets in the middle of fields, nonetheless festival fashion is as stylish as ever and you'll be dying to know who is wearing what. The festival fashionables of bohemia have been injected with a new lease of colour this summer, no doubt something that will prove a crowd pleaser.

Women's fashions will see a raft of colour and ruched designs like layered mini-skirts by Sessun or the bold patterns and prints on vests from Something Else by Natalie Wood and Christian Kane, with a different take on Fair Isle tanks from Giles Deacon. Deacon's other catwalk visions of balloon sleeves and Pom pom hats seemed to fall in line perfectly with the 70's theme and a new revived series of Charlie's Angels on its way. The restoration of other 70's shows like Hawaii 5.0 may have also sparked the imagination in men's designer fashion with Hawaiian prints from Ringspun and Marc by Marc Jacobs but we'll try not to blame Wonder Woman's screen comeback for the more questionable return of women's granny panties.

In a clear side-step from boho chic, disco is the other style ideal that would sum up the inspiration for our latest festival wardrobes with a clear nod to the glam and glitter days of stacked heels and satin scarves. As we gear up for this year's headliners, the likes of Derek Lam, Roberto Cavalli and Louis Vuitton on the spring/summer 2011 catwalks, pointed women's designer fashion firmly in the direction of denims and suede's and into flared trousers and platforms, while Salvatore Ferragamo brought back the jersey dresses and maxi skirts in a slew of muted brown hues. However, colour seems to be everywhere else with Prada's buzzing modes, Etro's tribal motifs and TopShop Unique's swirling patterns.

Diesel uses tie dyes, scoop and round necks to create unique t-shirts and vests in male designer fashion this season. And where better to embrace the festival season than on a fashion tee - the 70s music scene is lovingly embraced with iconography of Jim Morrison and David Bowie on label Amplified, Worn Free pays tribute to Alice Cooper and House of Gods goes for John Lennon. To keep things simple opt instead for a simple, polo shirt available from Fred Perry, Polo by Ralph Lauren, Fila Vintage and Farah Vintage with classic, recognisable branding. For that spot of summer rain stay stylish in a retro mac from YMC, Universal Works or Penfield.

Wooden beads by Asos, Vivienne Westwood's skull necklaces and bright beanies from Paul Smith prove that the 70s theme has infiltrated men's fashion accessories more than ever. To help shield the glare of the colours this season why not try Ray Ban's Clubmasters, Wayfarers or Aviators for that classic retro style, or give new sunglass designer Sunpocket a try. Either way a messenger bag will carry all the essentials and still look good from adidas originals and Superdry and for your feet Berkenstock sandals and YMC boat shoes are the perfect choice. For women's eyewear Gucci present larger than life sunglasses while Victoria Beckham opts for a round frame, for footwear look to Hasbeen clogs, Hunter Wellingtons or Havaianas flip-flops, depending on the time and the occasion - for any festival goer Wellingtons are a must. Complete the 70s look with a Lipsy crochet headband, a Eugenia Kim sunhat or a Mulberry or Missoni scarve and you're good to go!
