How To Watch TV On My Computer For Free

By Mariam Dodge

Modern technology has provided us with so much convenience, especially in this fast-paced and highly-technological world that we live in. The World Wide Web, for instance, has given us easy access to communication, information, and even entertainment. Internet TV has been, in fact, a growing fad these days. Now if you're wondering how to watch TV on my computer for free, then keep reading.

Before anything else, you will need to secure a device that will enable you to watch TV on your desktop or laptop computer. One example of such a device is the PC TV tuner card. A PC TV tuner card works by allowing television signals to be received by the computer, and it also permitting the recording of programs in the computer's hard disk.

TV tuner cards may come in two forms - external or internal. Also, there are mainly two types of tuner cards - digital and analog. A digital TV tuner card broadcasts the program in the MPEG2 format. As a result, the need for encoder is eliminated. A digital TV tuner can either broadcast the whole program or separate the audio and video. Depending on the user's needs, these tuners can rewind or fast-forward the program. Some even allow the users to divide the computer screen so that they can watch more than one program all at the same time.

On the other hand, an analog TV tuner card comes up with a raw video stream that can be viewed real-time but ideally requires some sort of compression if it is to be recorded. Analog TV tuner cards cannot broadcast the program in the JPEG motion or MPEG format. Also, they require compression and do not relieve the CPU from any load, which is why analog TV tuner cards are cheaper than the digital type.

But if you want to be able to switch between the analog and the digital TV tuner, then what you need is the hybrid type. This type has one tuner that can be configured to act as an analog tuner or a digital tuner, which is why it is more expensive. It does come with a number of features, though, like coming with a flash memory that helps it in decoding various types of video formats. The problem with hybrid tuners, though, is that switching between the systems cannot be done immediately and has to be configured first.

This, now, answers the question "how to watch TV on my computer for free".
