Dragon Age 2 Takes A Few Leaps Forward

By Tiffany Taylor

The Dragon Age series continues to flourish. Released for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PCs and for the Macintosh, Dragon Age: Origins was well received by fans and critics in 2009. Developed by Bioware, and published by Electronic Arts, the sequel, Dragon Age 2, has a March 2011 release date.

This fantasy adventure is set in a mythical world, which reminds one of the world in the Lord of the Rings. In Dragon Age: Origins the land is going through civil unrest, and you play a new recruit the the legendary order of warriors, the Grey Wardens. It is up to your character to unite the land before the impending invasion of demonic forces known as the Darkspawn.

This mythical world has not only been the settings for the games, as Dragon Age has also spawned two novels and a comic book series. The books, The Stolen Throne and The Calling were prequels to the Origins stories, and released in 2009.

Anime company, Funimation Entertainment, and co-producers Bioware and Electronic arts, also announced a movie version, with a 2011 release date set. This follows other EA games that have had animated movie adaptions like Dantes Inferno and Dead Space.

For those of you who played Origins, you will be able to import your saved game into Dragon Ages 2, and events in the new game will be influenced by things you did in the original. This is not the first time this device has been used by Bioware. In their other successful series, Mass Effect, you could load your saved game from the first game in the sequel and continue your character's adventure.

The original game was set in the kingdom of Ferelden, but Dragon Age 2's action mainly takes place in the land north of Ferelden, called the Free Marches. The stories do slightly overlap. The hero of the sequel, Hawke, has his tale begin in Lothering right before it is destroyed by the Darkspawn. He manages to escape and makes his way to Kirwall, in the Free Marches.

The game story focuses on how humanity is affected by the all of the past events, and this has also meant that this time you cannot choose for the main character to be any race but human, though you make a few changes to his appearance.

One of the most exciting parts about Dragon Age 2, is the main character is fully voiced this time. There has also been a great deal of work done on the engine, and visually it is a big step up, with its own distinct style. A new dialogue system has been introduced, based on the one used in the Mass Effect series.

A few characters that makes a return from the previous game include the Witch of the Wilds, Flemeth, Morrigans mother, and Isabela, the captain of the pirate ship, The Pearl.

Using a framed narrative to tell the story of Hawke, you will see the evolution of your character over the years. Dragon Age: Origins spanned just two years in the life of your Grey Warden, but now the story of Hawke will last over an entire decade. Decisions you make each year, will effect both the present and the future.

This series has a great deal of potential and there's no doubt that Dragon Age 2 is fulfilling it.
