Learning the Ropes

By Jeanette Tucker

Maybe you're one of those people who doesn't crave the sameness of the nine-to-five office job. Maybe you want to make sure your talents are recognized and that you have an opportunity to use them. Maybe you have the kind of face that can warm America's heart, or sell it good soap. In short, maybe you should think about trying your hand at modeling or acting.

There are many, many opportunities in the talent industry for a motivated, driven, responsible individual. But you've got to know how to navigate the often-treacherous waters of the industry in order to avoid sinking. To do that, you'll want to find a good talent agency. These are the people who help you get your composites made and shop you around to various casting directors. It's important that you find an agency that is good, and honest. A lot of them are just looking to get your money.

Making Friends

There are a few tips when it comes to looking for your future talent agency. This is an important relationship, so take the search seriously. Make sure the agency is fully licensed; make sure it has a client list with names you recognize; make sure it has been working in the industry for long enough to have established some credibility.

Once you've got an agency, you'll want to get composites made. Composites are the photo collection cards you carry into auditions, and that agencies use to shop you around -- they're your business cards, essentially. Photographers can help you get these made; many talent agencies can take care of this too.

Finding Your Future

There are, it's been noted, many, many job opportunities in this industry. You could model everything from your hair to your feet, and anything in between; you could find yourself featured in magazine ads, on radio spots, or walking the runway. Or, should you want to pursue the world of entertainment, there are always television shows filming episodes across the country -- movies are in production too, all the time. Now if none of this appeals to you, there are other options, including (but not limited to) finding your way into a music video or two -- many careers have been launched this way, believe it or not.

Even if you don't have exotic looks, you might be just right. Talent agencies are looking for people with all kinds of looks to fit all kinds of jobs. Your job is to be responsible and dedicated and charming and do what comes natural when the camera rolls.
