The sole objective in Holdem is to form a combination of five cards that will beat other players' hands. This may be formed either from the hole and community cards or just from the community cards.
The sequence is basically as follows:
Posting the Blinds - these are bets placed by two players on the dealer's left side. The player to the dealer's left posts the big blind, the one next to him posts the small blind which is half the amount of the big blind.
Hole Cards - these are two cards that are given faced down to Holdem players. If the dealer mistakenly deals the cards incorrectly, the cards need to be reshuffled and redealed again.
Pre Flop Betting - this is betting prior the flops are dealt. It is the first round of betting for the game. Players may opt to raise (increase the bet), call (match an opponent's bet increase) or fold (leave the game).
Burn Cards - these are cards that discarded in between betting rounds and community cards. This is practiced to prevent cheating.
The Flop - these are the first three community cards. These must always be dealt face up and placed at the table's center.
Second Betting - this is done after the flop but prior to the burn card and fourth community card.
The Turn - burn cards are always discarded before the fourth community card is drawn.
Third Betting - this is the third and last betting round before the last community card is dealt
The River - this is dealt after a burn card, and is the final community card to be drawn
The Showdown - this is where active players (those who have not folded) show and compare their hands to determine the winner of the game.
