How To Win At Blackjack

By Joe Manonn

Blackjack, also called 21, is one of the most popular card games in casinos, and sometimes in other settings. The rules are fairly simple, but playing strategies can become very complex. Let's take a look at how player may win money playing blackjack.

In blackjack play, the dealer plays against one or more players. The game starts with the players and the dealer each receiving two cards. All cards are face up except one of the dealer's. Each card has a value, face cards ten, aces either one or eleven, and number cards the number. Adding the card values gives the score for the hand.

The player's objective is to achieve a score higher than that of the dealer, but not greater than 21. Going over 21 is referred to as busting. There are a number of moves that players can make, but the most common ones are hit or stand. Hit means to receive another card, stand means no more cards. A player may hit as many times as they wish until they stand. The dealer must continue to take cards until they either bust or reach 17.

In this simplified version of play, the players either double their money, more for exactly 21 which is called a blackjack, or lose it during each round of play. This can be a very exciting game, and can also lead to winning or losing money very rapidly. The challenge is to find a way to consistently win, even if the amount is small.

There is a fairly simple basic strategy for blackjack that if played correctly leads to either slightly favorable or slightly unfavorable odds for players, depending on the rules being used. Based on the dealer's face up card (the dealer's other card is face down) and the player's current hand, it tells players whether to hit or stand. This approach is fairly easy to learn, but unfortunately in many cases it only minimizes losses rather than maximizes gains.

Most of the more complex strategies are based on keeping track of what cards have already been dealt from the current deck. This is called counting cards. Done properly, this gives players a estimate of how favorable the remaining cards will be. When the remainder is judged to be favorable, then players should increase their bet amount, otherwise they should decrease it.

Casinos tend to dislike card counting, and many of them will eject players who are caught in the act. This is understandable, as if it is done properly it can give players an advantage over the house. Collusion between players is particularly frowned on. In Nevada, counting cards is legal for individuals, but collusion is banned. One can conclude that it is possible to come out ahead at blackjack, but it is a lot of work.
