Texas Holdem or Holdem is fast becoming popular not only because it is a game of chance where anyone can win, but also because it takes skill to use the cards you may have been dealt. To be able to play this exciting game you must know the Hold Em rules.

Texas Hold Em usually seats 2-10 players at a time. Tables of six or less are considered short-handed while a two player game may be called 'head to head'

The objective of the game, of course, is to win. This may be done by combining the best possible hand or by compelling others to fold. Pretty much, anything you can do to win within the Hold Em rules.

The Hold Em Rules From The Start

One player usually starts out as the dealer. This position however, changes after every hand and will rotate clockwise around the table. Players are handed 2 individual hole cards at the start of the game. These cards must be dealt face down. If done otherwise, the dealer must reshuffle and deal again.

The first round of betting called pre-flop then begins. After betting, a burn card is discarded and three community cards are drawn face up and placed at the table's centre. These cards are called the flop cards and make up five of the community cards a game must have.

A second round of betting takes place when the flop has been placed. This is followed by a burn card that is taken from the deck and discarded. Then the fourth community card called the turn is drawn.

The last round of betting follow shortly after which another burn card is taken and the last community card, the river is dealt.

The game then ends in a showdown where players compare and identify the winner by the highest ranking hand. The last player to bet must show his cards first. This leaves the other players the option on whether to play on or 'muck'. Mucking is turning in your cards without having to show them. This is completely allowed within the Hold Em rules and is done to protect your strategy.
