Celebrities who have ventured into fashion

By Peter Ferguson

They may be singers, actresses and actors, or sports stars, but do they have any right to tell us what we should be wearing? The past ten years has seen a proliferation of celebrities getting in on the fashion world and launching their own clothing lines. Should we be calling them designers?

The queen of the celebrity designers has to be Victoria Beckham. She has worked hard to earn the respect of the insular fashion world. At first her clothing range was derided by critics but last year she came out fighting with a credible, sophisticated line which won over her critics and bagged a few celebrates wearers along the way. The approving nod from the fashionistas sets her label apart from the others.

Fashion is also on the CV of Victoria's famous friend Jennifer Lopez. In 2001 she launched her own JLO line with styles inspired by the lady herself. Then in 2004 Beyonc and her mother, Tina Knowles, did the same with House of Dereon, a top end clothing line. Later came a collaboration with her sister for the cheaper alternative aimed at teenagers. Dereon comes from her grandmother Agnez Dereon who was a talented seamstress and dressmaker.

Sarah Jessica Parker, who played the fashion-conscious Carrie Bradshaw in Sex in the City has surprised everyone and launched a line aimed at the lower end of the market. Available at Steve & Barry's stores in the US, the line is called Bitten, with the slogan "Fashion is not a luxury "and sizes range from 2 to 22.

Male celebrities have almost led the way for women. Jay-Z was one of the first celebrities to launch 'Rocawear' in 1999 and Sean 'Diddy' Combs brought out the Sean John Line not long after. Justin Timberlake even got in on the act in 2005 when he teamed up with a friend to launch William Rast clothing.
