Year Round Fun and Fitness

By Sanja Terry

It is almost a rite of passage in childhood: some sort of organized mandatory athletic participation. Some kids join a basketball or soccer team. Others go for individual sports like track or martial arts. Dance is a popular activity for both girls and boys. For many reasons taking dance classes is a great experience for kids.

One of the biggest benefits of studying dancing as a child is learning about spatial awareness. Dancing lessons can help even the clumsiest person learn how to move more smoothly through his or her environment. In addition, it will teach children to move their arms and leg in sync. This can benefit other activities.

Learning social skills is another benefit of taking dance classes. Most dance studio arrange classes by age group, so children learn dancing along with others their own age. As they advance, children can join a competitive dance team, which may dance together for months or even years. This allows your child to learn the moves and make new friends at the same time.

Of course socializing is not just restricted to the students. As with any other organized activity, parents who drive their kids to class and often stay to watch get to know each other. Often, this socialization by parents during the instruction can lead to play dates outside of class.

Dance recitals are another benefit of taking lessons. There is usually a recital at the end of a seasonal class and annually or semi-annually for those who dance year round. Not only will the child be able to show what he or she has learned to parents and other family members, he or she will also learn how to present him or herself in front of a crowd. This lesson can definitely be expanded as the child grows up and will help build the confidence needed when making presentations later in life.

Dancing is very physical, and as such it helps them develop strength and stamina which improves their performance in other sports. Since dance classes take place primarily indoors and year round, it's a great conditioning activity for kids who participate in seasonal sports. Professional athletes often take dancing in the off season to keep their muscles trained.

Children gain self confidence by succeeding at something. Dance is a great opportunity to improve their skills over time, thus improving their self image. Through dance, a child can learn new ways to express him or herself. Dance can improve a child's behavior for several reasons. First, the exercise helps get the wiggles out, so a child is less likely to be fidgety. Exercise is well known to release stress too.

There are several things to consider when looking for a dance studio that offers classes for kids. First, how do the instructors interact with the children? Is it a fiercely competitive environment, or a positive encouraging environment. The best way to find out is to watch a class, preferably of kids the same age as your child. Time and money are also considerations. Is this something your child can do once or twice a week, or is daily practice required? What is the cost involved? It's never a good idea to select a studio based on price alone, but at the same time you want to make sure you can afford it. The feel of a particular studio is very important. A child who is very serious about dancing may not like a more casual studio; in the same vein, a child who is taking dance simply as an activity may be overwhelmed by more serious instruction.

Dance classes for kids are a wonderful way for children to stay active year-round. Many dance studios have music and movement classes for kids as young as three. No matter what the age of the child, dance classes will have a benefit on their life.
