Jazz Festival is among Cork City's Top Visitor Attractions
Cork is Ireland's Ireland's second largest city. It is situated on the south coast of the country at the mouth of the River Lee. It was mainly a trading city for centuries and has been always considered a sporting city with Gaelic football and Hurling, soccer, racing and yachting being among the predominant sports. But it is as a city of music that Cork has gained notoriety over the past thirty years.
The city's reputation on the international stage had been growing for some time and the Cork International Jazz Festival had brought it to world attention over the previous years. The festival is held every year in October and regularly attracts about 50,000 jazz afficionados from all over the world. Since 1978 when this jazz festival started, its reputation has steadily grown all over the world and many of the top jazz artists have played there during its 35 years. Many of Ireland's great jazz players including guitarists Louis Stewart and Mark O'Leary, have made appearances. Each year new talent emerges and in 2010 was no exception with the likes of Mose Allison Quartet, The Blind Boys of Alabama and the Gary Burton - Richard Galliano Quartet entertaining Irish audiences for the first time.
The city has many suitable venues for staging music events of all sizes. The big bands and more famous artists usually play in the large venues like The Metropole Hotel, The Cork Opera House and The Everyman Theatre. Many of the smaller acts appear at lounge bars, pubs and smaller theatres. Throughout the city you can find many bands and musicians playing on the street. There are also music workshops, talks, comedy and theatre events all through the weekend.
Although Jazz was considered mainstream, especially in America in the 1930s and 1940s it is very much a minority musical genre nowadays although it experienced a revival in the 60s and 70s with new experimentation and various mixtures of Jazz and Rock.
The city hosts many festivals throughout the year including The Arts Fest, The Cork Folk Festival, Cork Cycling Festival, The French Film Festival, The Cork International Choral Festival and many others but undoubtedly the Jazz Festival tops them all in the level of excitement, worldwide interest and business for the city.
