Improve Your Singing Voice

By Pamela C Smith

To improve singing voice, it is important that you exercise your throat everyday. If you want to develop an impressive vocal range and a wonderful tone you should be prepared to put in diligent and consistent hard work because it is certainly not something that is going to happen in a day. The exercises given below will help you to develop these traits in your voice.

The position of the larynx is primarily responsible for the tone of your voice and the way you sound. The larynx is an organ in the neck also called the voice box which is made up of muscles, cartilage and ligaments. Here is a simple experiment that will help you gauge the importance of the position of your larynx in creating the right tone.

You will need to open your mouth wide like in a yawn. This position of the mouth will relax the muscles of the throat and if you make the vowel sound 'aah' you will hear a sound with a rich tone. In order to feel the position of the larynx you will have to place your fingers on the Adam's apple or the distinct bump on your throat. The larynx moves down when the rich tone is made. The downward movement of the larynx increases the distance traveled by the sound before it reaches your mouth. And this is what produces the rich tome.

If you want to hear the tonal effect of a upward movement of the larynx start by producing the sound of he word' nay' with a marked nasal tone. Remember the actress Fran Dresher from the sitcom 'nanny'. Try to sing the way she would. If you keep your fingers on your throat you will feel the larynx move upwards. The tone that you produce is dominated by a nasal tinge and sounds terrible.

This proves that the tone of the voice can be directly attributed to the position of the larynx. To produce the best tone of voice you need to maintain your larynx in the mid position. This mid position keeps the larynx relaxed producing the best tones. In order to keep the larynx in this mid position you will need to practice to keep the muscles surrounding it relaxed. The exercises given below will get you started.

You will need to start by placing your fingers on your neck to feel the position of your larynx. Repeat the exercise given above to center the larynx.

The next step is to do the normal breathing exercising while ensuring that the larynx still stays in the center.

The larynx should be maintained in the central position even while you are singing. You can start by singing the scales the way you normally do. While you sing keep your fingers on your neck, if you feel the larynx moving upwards open your mouth to relax the muscles surrounding it pushing the larynx back down. Repeat this procedure even when you are singing the other scales.

Larynx control should also be practiced while singing the words. If you sing a verse from your favorite song and observe the movement of your larynx you will notice that it moves upwards. Similarly when you sing the song with your mouth open the tone produces is rich and beautiful.

Singing is not a difficult skill to master but it does take a lot of patience, time and perseverance.
