Learn To Do Breathing Exercises For Singing Improvement

By Pamela C Smith

By engaging in breathing exercises for singing, you can become a much improved vocalist. A number of vocal coaches put as much emphasis on breathing as they put on any aspect of singing. Are you surprised by this? Perhaps you feel that since breathing is something we all do naturally, it isn't something that anyone needs to practice.

The truth is that practicing ones breathing technique is integral to many activities and disciplines. It plays a large role in everything, from how you sing to the way you meditate; from yoga to the martial arts. A renowned psychologist developed a program for increasing self confidence. It centers around awareness of your breathing pattern. The patients are taught to focus on that every time they are in a situation where they feel a lack of confidence.

Most people breathe incorrectly, and you are probably not an exception. You might be surprised how your life is being affected, as a result. Think about the times you are nervous. Almost always, your breaths are quicker, shorter. Your performance in most everything you do, suffers when you are nervous. This is especially true when you sing. If you join a class for yoga or tai chi or mediation, you will become a better singer, believe it or not.

Each one of these disciplines will teach you to quit sucking your gut in and to inhale by filling your lungs to the bottom, and then to the top. As you exhale, start from the top, and to make sure you get all the air out, push in your abdomen, at the end of your breath. Then start again.

If you are like most people, you usually breathe with under fifty percent of your lung capacity. When you sing with this style of breathing, your phrasing will suffer greatly, since you will be forced to take breaths, when you should be singing. You will also not be able to hold your notes very long.

Other aspects of your performance are also affected negatively, including your tone and general quality. By learning how to breathe correctly, your ability to sing will definitely be improved. A really good drill for increasing the capacity of your lungs is to hold your breath for as long as you can, and time yourself doing it.

With practice, you can work your way to one or even two minutes without needing to take a breath. Take it slowly, a little improvement at a time. One of the best breathing exercises for singing is to sing as you are jogging, and try not to have the song affected very much. At first it will seem impossible, but with practice, you will be surprised how well you do.
