Basic Tattoo Equipment Every Artist Needs

By Kevin Frederick Staples

To perform safe and professional body art you need a variety of tattoo equipment. The professional knows that it takes more than a gun and some pigment to produce quality work. For those not in the know, here is a list of everything you will need.

One of the most important things an artist needs is an autoclave. This is a way for everything to be sterilized properly. An autoclave applies high pressures of steam to the needles and tubes. This decontaminates everything and makes it all safe for use.

No successful body art would be possible without the actual machine. This is often called a gun within the industry. The needles of the gun are moved up and down by electromagnetic coils. The speed of these coils can be increased or decreased by using a foot control.

The needles that are used in the gun vary in size depending on the work being done. For outlines, five or three round lines are used. For shading and detail, flag or mag needles are needed. The mags are staggered and this lets the pigment be applied very evenly.

Before work can begin, green soap is used to clean the area. This is simple vegetable oil. This should be used to clean the work as needed and also at the very end, right before the work is covered up.

The brand of ink used is down to the artist's preference. The best inks will stay vibrant after they have been applied and will go on smoothly. Talk to other artists about their chosen brands. Every tattooist should wear rubber gloves. The best kind is latex free, because some people are sensitive to the other kind. They should also be powder free as well; many people find that the powder irritates their skin.

The ultrasonic is also another important tool of the trade. This will dislodge any unwanted deposits of ink on the skin. It does this by emitting a high frequency vibration and needs to be applied before the color of the art is changed.

A grip is important for the outcome of the design and for your comfort. Without the appropriate sized grip, your hand could become uncomfortable and mistakes could be made. Make sure you experiment and find the right sized grip for you.

This is the standard tattoo equipment every artist should have. A lot of this is down to personal taste, but some things are standard. Always work with an artist that has all of these items in their studio.
