Grizzlies' Mayo Suggests Energy Drink Caused Affirmative Drug Test

By Daniel Scott

Memphis Grizzlies' guard O.J. Mayo was suspended by the NBA for 10 games without pay for infringing the league's anti-drug program late last week after testing optimistic for a official permitted, widely available supplement that can be purchased over the counter at any major department store or drug store in the United States. Or, in Mayo's case, any gas station. Mayo has suggested that his clear test was the result of an energy drink purchased at a local gas station-which is really a very plausible scenario.

Mayo tested positive for a substance called dehy droepiandro sterone, more commonly known as DHEA. DHEA is a legal steroid precursor, which means that it is converted into a steroid like substance by the body itself. Although it's banned by many sports leagues, it's a commonly used supplement not only for athletes but for adult males in the general population. Mayo originally maintained that he obtained the substance unknowingly in an over the counter supplement:

"It was an honest error, but I take full responsibility for my actions. I regret to my enthusiastic, teammates and the Grizzlies organization for unfortunately not doing the necessary research about what supplements I can put in my body."

This weekend, however, he suggested that a gas station energy drink could have been the source of the DHEA. While none of the main energy drinks contain DHEA there are so many small 'regional' brands able-some of which do contain DHEA-that Mayo's theory has some good point:

"I didn't know it had any terrible substances in it, and it caused a 10-game suspension," Mayo said. "It's not like I went to a GNC and got some Muscle Armor or prepared some supplement off the Internet or anything. It was just a local gas station that type of got me hemmed up."

Wizards' forward Rashard Lewis was also suspended for DHEA in 2009 and offers the following advice:

"After my occasion, I was told that you actually have to pay close attention to what you purchasing, even if it's out of a Walgreens or a supplement store or GNC, anything, from cough medicine. It can be on the list."

Mayo was the No. 3 pick generally in the 2008 NBA draft after playing only one season at USC, and runner-up to Chicago's Derrick Rose for rookie of the year. He was moved to the bench earlier this period, starting just 15 of Memphis' 45 games and has been mentioned as possibly being on the trading block. The Grizzlies will play without Mayo at home beside Orlando on Monday night-Memphis has been putted in as a +1' point NBA betting underdog against the Magic.
